How Long Tail Keywords Can Benefit Your Business
31 March, 2011
Long tail keywords are normally several words long, and they’re much more specific than shorter, broader keywords. For instance, a short keyword might be made up of one or two words, for example, ‘SEO Techniques’. A long tail version might be ‘Small Business SEO Techniques’ which is made up of four or five words.
These longer keywords have different purposes and advantages. Working them into your website copy can really help boost your traffic and online business in several ways.
1. Raise your ranking
One of the main problems with generic, broad, or short keywords is that they’re often very competitive. There may be thousands or even millions of other websites that use shorter keywords. This means it’s really difficult to rank highly for these keywords.
Longer keywords, though, can be tailored to your website. Since fewer websites provide exactly what you provide, these keywords aren’t used as often. This makes them less competitive and means you can rank more highly with these keywords. Even though they’re less competition, they’re still deliver traffic to your website.
2. Plenty of options
There are lots and lots of keyword options with long tail keywords. Since there are so many options for these keywords, it’s easy to work them into your website content naturally. With a little bit of research using free tools such as Google AdWords, you can easily find plenty of these longer keywords suitable for your business.
3. Convert more visitors
With an online business, your main goal is to convert traffic into profit. With long tail keywords, this is a whole lot easier. People who use these long, specific keywords often know what they’re looking for. Instead of just researching something related to your business niche, they’re looking for a specific product or piece of information. Because of this, visitors who come into your website through these keywords are more likely to buy what you’re selling.
Using long tail keywords
As we’ve mentioned, the sheer number of options for these longer keywords means they’re easy to use. You can build pages around them or use them as part of your link building strategy. You might also want to use them on social networking websites or on articles you submit to places outside of your website. Another option is to use these keywords in landing pages describing your products or services.
Working long tail keywords into your website should be an essential part of creating your content. As you’re planning new pages, think about the different ways you can work these long, specific keywords into your content naturally.
